Grade 3 In Class Support

Our Grade 3 students continued to experiment and learn about various types of performances.

In Miss Michelle's class, they had an exciting session of performing the stories we read together. The students listened to the story and then had to pair-share for 5 minutes. Next, they had about 15 minutes to practice retelling the story with a partner. The goal was to entertain the audience and our students tried to employ the learned strategies: they asked the audience some questions, asked the audience to copy their gestures, they used voices and presented unexpected turns of events to keep the audience focused.

Everybody really liked the activity and were very engaged. When it was time to present both the audience and performers had lots of fun.

The boys were confident and funny and the rest of the class truly enjoyed their presentation.
Later this week Miss Claire's students worked on creating podcasts with the help of the bossjock app.

They worked in 5 collaborative groups and had to record a fairy tail with sound effects and music.

Kim Veng's group was practicing retelling "The Goldilocks and the Three Bears" story. Kim Veng was responsible for various sound effects. The students were excited and collaboratively chose the music for their podcast.

During the Grade 3 rotation this week I worked with a group of students creating and reciting poems.

The students had a choice to work individually or in groups. Rossie chose to work by herself and created a lovely poem. While reciting her poem, Rosie practiced improving her expression and her ability to speak loudly and clearly.

Bravo Rosie!!

EAL In Class Support In Grade 1

Miss Carina's students practiced creating timelines about the most important events in their lives. We had a very interesting discussion about everyone's past. We also talked about what events are important and why. At the end of the lesson the timelines of all four students were ready and I am sure the rest of Miss Carina's class will find them very interesting.

Miss Carina's students wrote about their first birthdays, first teeth and first steps and of course about the time when they first came to ISPP.
In Miss Kelly's classroom all the students were busy writing their personal narratives and Vincent shared a lot of ideas with me.

All the scaffolding cards were very helpful and Vincent finished his story about a lost teddy bear just in time.
FL Grade 3 Class

In my FL class this week the Grade 3 students were engaged in an exciting task of figuring out the message of a painting. First we discussed the paintings, talking about what colors, lines, forms and the main subject they saw in the painting. The next step was to interpret the paining and try to figure out what the artist wanted to say to his audience.

Jiun and Hyo Yeon confidently presented their ideas.

Moon Ju and Mollymoon had interesting ideas and Moon Jo structured the presentation very well.

Maly and Hailey shared a lovely story about a bird in November.
On Friday we enjoyed playing charades. All my students were very creative miming their tasks. Everyone was excited and laughed a lot.

Kenta chose Moon Ju and she shared her guess.
Mollymoon was very expressive and lots of her friends were eager to give the answer.

Grade 1 EAL In Class Support

After analyzing the results of the DRA assessment the Grade 1 the classroom teachers regrouped the students. Our busy readers continued to develop their reading skills in new groups.
Viphou, Johan and the girls enjoy making predictions before we begin reading the book.
Miss Carina's students were challenged with the big task of revising learned sight words and had to write a dictation.

All the students took the task very seriously and tried their best.
Miss Kelly's class and Miss Rachelle's class practiced writing personal narratives. The children spent a lot of time planning, choosing and discussing ideas. Ms. Rachelle provided her students with a scaffold in the form of a graphic organizer.

Miss Kelly's students are busy planning and Vincent is the first one to finish!
Miss Rachelle's young writers are almost finished with their narratives!

Our Grade 3 ELLs together with their mainstream peers had lots of fun this week creating limericks.

After listening to the explanation, the students worked in four collaborative groups. When the limericks were written, the children had to act them out and we all enjoyed their humorous and expressive performances.

Samir, Alex and Sorriaj are performing.
Dog Named Kevin

There once was a dog named Kevin
Who went shopping and bought a lemon
He made some lemonade
And yellow marmalade
And invited his friend named Mevin. (By Samir, Alex and Sorriaj)

She went shopping and bought some mascara
Then she ate one Hershie

And they traveled by car to Canberra. (By Moon Ju and Dinith)

Moon Ju and Dinith are performing in class.
In Miss Claire's class, the students also started researching about famous performers and writing their biographies.

Mollymoon and Jennifer are learning about Taylor Swift.
In Miss Lisa's class, lots of students finished their "I Wonder" projects and practiced presenting them to the whole class.

Hyo Yeon's presentation was about one of the best universities in Korea. She is planning to enter it when she graduates from ISPP.
Grade 3 FL Class

My Grade 3 EAL students watched Maya Plisetskaya's dance "The Dying Swan" and had to write about the story behind the dance. Fortunately, none of the children knew the "Swan Lake" ballet story and their guessing was genuine. I was amazed by the stories that they wrote! Several of my students were very close to the original story and I can only explain it by the expressive power of dance and music.

Samir is sharing his story with the group.

Grade 3 In Class EAL Support

The grade 3 students and teachers had lots of fun last week and this week.
To revise procedure writing we offered our students the opportunity to create an original game, write the instructions, play it with friends and finally adjust their initial instructions. All the children were very enthusiastic about creating their own games. The next step was to play it and see if everything worked and then make the necessary changes.

Brainstorming about the games with their partners.
Playing games was the post exciting part of the assignment.

After playing the game Miss Lisa's G3 students chose to record the procedures and instructions and upload everything on their blogs.

Jiun and Hyo Yeon did a great job recording their game instructions.

Another fun way to practice procedure writing was doing an experiment and then writing it up.The experiment was about mixing baking soda and vinegar and then inflating a balloon with the gas that formed from the chemical reaction.

The students had to analyze the written instructions for the experiment and answer comprehension questions.

Tayler shared an excellent hypothesis with the class and Kahal was happy to support him.
Our running dictation activity was another highlight of the week! During the planning session, the classroom teachers and I chose several limericks for this activity. Our students had to work with a partner and complete the running dictation. After that, they had to memorize it and perform in front of the class.

The five limericks are on the board. Maly was a reader and a runner.
Hailey was a writer.
Samir was a reader and a runner.

When the limericks were dictated and written, our students had some time to learn the lines and practice acting them out. All the children were very excited and the final performances were so much fun!!
Hailey and Kira did very well performing.
In Miss Michelle's classroom, the students continued sharing their thinking about performing. After creating their own definition of the word "performing", they were engaged in the Color Symbol Image thinking routine about performing. During circle time, all the students could choose to share either their color, symbol or image and explain their thinking.
It was exciting to observe and listen to our students' answers.
Grade 1 In Class Support

All the Grade 1 teachers and students were busy completing the DRA assessment this week. The results are splendid! It is obvious that our Grade 1 teaching team chose all the appropriate strategies to develop our students reading skills.

Neath is a confident reader of fiction and non-fiction texts!
Both Viphou and I enjoyed reading together!
Grade 3 EFL Class

My students were busy finishing up their writing assessment.
We also had discussions about various performance messages and exchanged our opinions about the performances we saw this week.
