Grade 3 In Class Support

In Miss Lisa's class we started the new semester with the Color Symbol Image thinking routine. Our students had to think about themselves as learners. All the children were fully engaged in creating their posters. Soon it was time to share and the boys and girls took turns explaining their thinking and making it visible. Lots of original ideas and symbols were shared and discussed. It was interesting for me to listen to the students' perception of their learning styles and strategies.

It was a great sharing session and even the EAL students felt very confident
Miss Michelle's class was busy writing a recount about their holidays. Moon Ju was writing about her trip to Siem Reap and I helped her with some wording and sentence structure. We also used Google translate to clarify the meaning of some English words and translate them into Korean.

During the second session in Miss Michelle's class the students had to face the challenge of selecting 20 items to take with them on a hot air balloon. The objects had to help them survive a long journey. After a heated discussion the 20 items were selected, only to find out that we had to get rid of 15 of them and keep only the 5 most important ones. Our students were supposed to start thinking about their needs and wants with the help of this activity.

Moon Ju came up with several great ideas and suggested to her team to take a medical kit with them.
In Miss Claire's room we had our usual guided reading session. Kim Veng, Mollymoon, Jennifer and Sanita had a lot of fun reading "Dragon with A Cold".  We discussed some of the figurative language to make sure my students understood every detail of the story. We also talked about what we learned from the story and it was interesting to hear the various useful lessons that they picked up.

Grade 1 In Class Support

Throughout the first week we were busy assessing our Grade 1 students. The students made great progress in their reading and the teachers need to regroup them to form new ability groups.
Arun was very a confident  reader during the assessment.
Grade 3 EFL Class

I have started discussing rights and responsibilities with my Grade 3 students. We reread the "Turkey Girl" story and made connections to our responsibilities at home.  The students shared their thinking about what happens when we neglect our responsibilities.

I also thought it would be beneficial for my students to revisit some editing strategies. We completed the "Revise Your Writing" comprehension activity and tried to apply the revised strategies.

Samir applied the editing strategies and corrected some of his spelling and punctuation.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

The last two weeks in December before the holidays were busy and exiting at the same time.

The summative assessment was successfully completed, parents had a chance to learn a lot about their children's learning during the Three-Way Conferences, and the Sports Days were full of joy and laughter!

All the students and teachers worked hard during the first semester and are ready for the break.

I hope everyone has relaxing holidays, enjoys family time and gets ready for school in January!

Grade 1 In Class EAL Support

On Monday morning Miss Rachelle's students had to practice reading books and then create a post card.

Two procedure texts were prepared by Rachelle in advance and our students had to compare the two texts and decide which one was better.  The children read through both and immediately realized that one procedure was better than the other, as there was more information and the steps were numbered.

After reading the procedure texts together with my students, I modeled card writing and we discussed their ideas for making cards. After modeling and discussing the language it was easier for the students to create their own cards.

Nao Nao and Noah are nearly finished creating their cards.

Miss Claire's students were blogging on Monday in our computer lab. Jennifer decided to reflect on their field trip to the water treatment plant. Mollymoon wrote about their buddy session when they created some paper boats together. KimVeng decided to share his Minecraft experience.

All the students had to write a blog and illustrate it with some photographs.

Miss Lisa's students had to brainstorm the causes of water pollution and then choose one form of pollution to begin their own research.

Maly's group shared the results of the brainstorm.
In Miss Michelle's class our students also had to discuss the causes of water pollution in groups. After making a list of causes the children had to focus on one form of pollution and create a question about it.  When we shared and discussed the big questions, the students realized that they have to come up with more questions to plan their research. It was done in groups and then shared in a form of a Gallery Walk activity.

Grade 3 EFL Class

We had an exciting class at the beginning of the week as my EFL students had to present their projects about the journey of the river.

We had an opportunity to listen to three presentations and share our feedback with the presenting team. We also talked about feedback and how we should word our comments in order to support our peers. Sentence starters like : "I noticed that..., I wonder..., I discovered that..., I think..., I like..." were introduced to the students before we started to comment and they were encouraged to use them.

Hailey's group members were very confident.
Bie Bie's group managed to overcome some disagreements and did a great job.

Jiun's group demonstrated great presenting skills and correct pronunciation of challenging words.

EAL Grade 3 In Class Support

My grade 3 students were busy readers all through this week. We read a book about the Force of Water and an article about why people build settlements close to rivers. The classes were divided in small groups to allow our students to have meaningful discussions and raise questions. Some questions were answered during the reading, while others will still have to be researched.

In Miss Michelle's class during one of our "I Wonder" sessions, Moon Ju and I  were researching how to become a police officer. We found some information online and used the scaffolding card with sentence starters. This video is the outcome of our wonderings.

In Miss Claire's class we discussed how to make shoes, and used some scaffolding cards with sentence starters.

EAL Grade 1 In Class Support

The week had an exciting beginning as we had to participate in a challenging activity outside of Miss Rachelle's classroom. The class was divided into four teams and the challenge was to communicate a certain message to another team.  There were certain rules and we were not allowed to use verbal communication. The students on my team were very enthusiastic and creatively used the materials that were prepared for us.  We wanted to communicate to another group that we were happy and this is what we did:

First we wrote our message on paper but the other team was too far away to read it.
After that we created a happy face out of a hoop and paper balls, which were made into dangling eyes.
The grade 1 students enthusiastically participated in our reading rotation activities. My students read books about saying "thank you" and asking people if they need help. First they made predictions before reading the books, and subsequently made their personal connections after reading them.

EFLGrade 3 Class

After a week long holiday I felt that my students needed some revision of unit vocabulary. On Monday my ELLs began a cooperative activity of creating a poster about the journey of the river. My students had to work in a group of three other students. It was interesting to observe the team dynamics, with some students being highly supportive of each other, while others found it more challenging due to arising arguments.

While the girls were writing the title, Jiun and Kim Veng began the sorting out job.

Maly's group is almost done and will be ready to present on Monday.

Our Trip to the Mekong River
In Class EAL Support in Grade 3

On Tuesday this week our big Grade 3 Team of 60 students, several teachers and teaching assistants went on a field trip to see three different parts of the Mekong River. During the previous week new vocabulary was introduced and this week on Tuesday the children could see a confluence and a meander with their own eyes. The students had to observe the river with various lenses (tourist, fisherman, environmental  worker, etc.) and create simple sketches about what they saw. After observing a part of the river the students also had to write down questions that came to their minds.

The children had a great time, learned a lot about the river, and were tired in the end.  I am sure they will reflect a lot on this learning experience as the unit goes on and we start talking about settlements.

We saw various boats on the river front.

We also had a chance to discuss what we saw with each other.

We saw fishermen and water plants.
The vocabulary activity that we did last week gave our students an opportunity to practice the academic language of the unit when they were talking about the river. During our "Stir the Class" activity the children had to share their own definitions/understanding of the new words with various groups of peers. We also practiced sequencing images of the river parts.
Students matching words and their definitions and constructing their own meaning.
All the way from the source to the mouth of the river!
Grade 3 EFL Class

In our EFL class we revised the Simple Past tense, irregular verbs and created  a daily routine for practicing their spelling. We also began reflecting on our River field trip and creating posters about the various parts of the river. I hope we will have great presentations when we are ready.

Grade 1 in Class EAL Support

It was great to work with enthusiastic Grade 1 readers this week.  We had  a chance to learn about mind maps and practiced creating one.
We learned about mind maps!

In Miss Kelly's room the students were busy with math assessment.
Vincent wrote about 2D and 3D shapes.
Miss Carina's readers were very engaged in our "Hot Seat" session and shared their perspectives pretending to be a character in the story that we read.

Issac told us about how he would build a snowman.

The Friday rotation activities went well. My group welcomed a new student from Miss Kelly's class. His name is Samnang. My students retold Samnang the story we read last time using their mind maps. After that we read the story again to check if we missed any important events during retelling.

I also used a scaffold with three questions (Who?When? What?) to support my students through our discussion of the story. On the worksheet that I prepared my students had a choice of creating a sketch, writing a word or a phrase or doing sketching and writing in order to use it when retelling or sharing their thinking about the story.

All my students chose writing and drawing.

Grade 3 EFL Class

My students and I had so much fun this week creating poems and riddles about our Earth and other planets. To activate the prior knowledge of my kids about riddles, we discussed what riddles are and watched some slides with riddles about planets. To build up the confidence of my ELLs and bring in an atmosphere of competition I shared some riddles of me ELLs from the previous year.

To scaffold the creative process I decided to complete a worksheet with 8 riddles that the students had to solve.
Girls solved the planet riddles very quickly.

After we checked the worksheet together with an answer key that I projected on the screen, I said it was time for my students to practice creating their own riddles. I prepared special space theme frames for the students to publish their riddles and that was an additional motivator.

Here are some of our acroctic poems about EARTH:

Earth is very
Amazing, I always
Remember Earth.
The earth is different.
Hey! Do you like Earth?!

Enormous Earth
Armed Earth
Risk-taking Earth
Threatened Earth

Grade 3 In Class Support

This week in Miss Micelle's class I chose one of the understanding visible thinking routines - creating understanding maps to practice the reading comprehension skills of our Grade 3 students.

I chose two fables - one to model the strategy ("Belling the Cat") and another for students' guided practice ("The Boy Who Cried Wolf"). I also prepared my scaffold of the Ron Ritchhart's Understanding Map by changing the order of steps and putting all 8 steps into a grid.

At the beginning of the class we all read the "Belling the Cat" fable, and I asked the students to reflect on their process of thinking about the story and trying to understand it. We had a brief discussion and agreed that it always starts with a question in your head. While talking to our students I modeled going through the understanding process steps, sticking the cards with the steps on the board as a visual scaffold.

Next we went back to the fable and started by formulating a question about the lesson or moral of the story. Then we practiced making our understanding process visible while going through the 8 steps and talking about it. Gradually we came to the core of our question and managed to answer it. As a result we had at least 3 various lessons/morals of the story and every student could learn something that he or she connected to.

After that I gave my students the second fable and they formed four cooperative groups. Each group had an adult in it as there were two teachers and two TAs during this session. Both TAs, Miss Michelle and I guided the students during the discussion.
The students' goal was to read the fable and, using the Understanding Map, formulate the lesson/moral of the fable and write it in one sentence. During this activity all our students had to discuss their thinking and practiced using metalanguage.

All the students in Miss Michelle's classroom enjoyed this activity.

Grade 3 In Class Support

On Tuesday Miss Michelle's students were presenting their reports to the class. the children worked in 5 collaborative groups. All our students were very creative and presented not only information but also engaged the audience in interactive activities like quizzes and question/answer sessions. In order to make sure our students were moving around the classroom, we played the 2 Corners Game. During the game our students had to sort out cards with FACTS and OPINIONS, read them aloud and stick them to the appropriate poster.

After listening to all five presentations, I asked the children to get back into their collaborative groups and check whether their reports were structured correctly. That way I wanted my kids to reflect on their reports.

Mia is checking some final facts for the quiz on her iPad.
The boys are discussing who would say what during the presentation.

In Miss Lisa's room we all were engaged in vocabulary activities. We read aloud the new words of the unit, decided how many syllables each word had and arranged them in alphabetical order. I also used Google translate with my Korean students and made sure those who needed it had a Korean translation of these new words.

On Thursday Lisa and I began to assess our students' reading skills. The DRA assessment (The Developmental Reading Assessment) was developed by Joetta Beaver and published by Pearson Learning Group.  The Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) helps teachers in K - 8 identify students' strengths and weaknesses in reading.  These results then drive effective reading instruction.   With the DRA results, a teacher can:  analyze student reading performance within a literature-based reading program,  set instructional goals specific to each child, document student progress over time, and match readers to appropriate reading levels and books.

Maly read well and retold the story including all the important events.
BB  enjoyed his assessment as well.

In Miss Claire's classroom our students were busy collecting notes and facts for their Earth Reports. I supported the whole class during this activity as Claire assessed her students' reading skills. My ELLs were fully engaged in the task as I pre-taught this earlier in my EFL class, using the same template. During  that EFL class my students had to sort out and collect facts about the moon. I showed my students a video about the moon as an instructional scaffold.

Jennifer and Mollymoon enjoyed the activity and it did not take them long to complete it successfully.
In Class Support in Grade 1

As usual we had our rotation activities and guided reading sessions in Grade 1 this week. I worked with small groups of students, developing their reading comprehension skills. This week our teaching team agreed to focus on activating our students' prior knowledge and practicing predicting as  important comprehension strategies. We had group discussions, made personal connections and created mind maps.

Miss Kelly's students are creating a recipe of their favourite sandwiches after reading about a sandwich made by Cat and Dog.
Grade 3 EFL Class

After finishing up their presentations of the report about the moon, I wanted my students to reflect on what they had learnt recently. I chose the visible thinking routine "I used to think...., but now I think..." for my ELLs to measure up their knowledge about the moon.
I learnt that my students' thinking had changed in many ways: some of them used to think that our moon shines and then learned that it only reflects the sun light, others thought that it takes  our moon 30 or 31 days to orbit the Earth and then learned that it actually takes only 28 days. While working on this activity the children discussed their learning with their peers.

My students realized they learned a lot of facts about the moon during this unit.
